Electrostatic Charge on a Hollow Sphere
A hollow sphere can be used to demonstrate that charge moves to the outside of a conductor.
- Charge the proof plane and touch it to the outside of the hollow sphere. Use the electroscope to determine if a charge has been transferred to the sphere.
- Repeat the last procedure, but touch the proof plane to the inside of the sphere. Be sure not to touch the edge of the hole in the sphere.
- Charge the sphere by touching it to the the ball dome of a Van De Graaff generator. Touch a neutral proof plane to the outside of the sphere to check to see if charge has been transferred to the proof plane.
- Repeat the last procedure but touch the proof plane to the inside of the shell. Again, be sure not to touch the edge of the hole in the sphere.
