An acrylic plate is used on an overhead projector.  The plate has a single bar magnet and a coil. Attach the coil to a DC power supply. Sprinkling irons filing over the plate and tapping it (or using a compass) will reveal the lines of the magnetic fields, showing that the coil produces the same field as a bar magnet.
